Bankless: Zcash Development Funding Surplus Sparks Controversy, Four Proposals Target Block Reward Distribution Mechanism
Bankless published an article discussing the controversy surrounding excess development funding for Zcash, noting that the size of the Zcash development grant pool has continued to expand, with its current estimated net value reaching approximately $125 million—far exceeding immediate expenditure needs. Zcash co-founder and current head of Tachyon, Sean Bowe, has introduced a proposal recommending the termination of the 8% block reward currently allocated to ZCG during a future network upgrade. On the development funding mechanism, the community has so far put forward four proposals, which respectively involve ending ZCG grants, eliminating the entire development fund allocation system, or gradually reducing the allocation rate to zero. Proponents argue that the current mechanism causes funds to continuously accumulate as ZEC prices rise, while ZCG remains outside direct control by token holders. Opponents, however, worry that scaling back development funding without viable alternatives could hinder the protocol’s ongoing development and maintenance. All proposals remain under discussion and have not yet been finalized.
Zcash Developers Bring Tachyon Code into Zakura Common, Aiming for Over 50,000 Private Payments Per Second
Odaily News: Zcash developers are integrating parts of the scaling project Tachyon's code into the Zakura Common cryptography library, with a new component called Udon released on Monday. Tachyon lead Sean Bowe stated that Udon was previously developed as part of Tachyon and has now been added to Zakura Common to leverage the library's existing performance optimizations.The long-term goal set by Bowe and Dev Ojha, lead at Valar Group, is to achieve over 50,000 private payments per second. Tachyon aims to reduce the amount of data that Zcash nodes need to receive and verify by merging proofs from multiple transactions into a single proof. However, the upgrade has not yet been activated on the Zcash network.According to ZecStats data, in the 7 days ending September 28, Zcash averaged approximately 6,200 transactions per day involving shielded funds, down from an average of approximately 11,700 per day in the 7 days ending September 21. PopDEX builds high-performance on-chain trading infrastructure based on Morph Tachyon, driving performance upgrades for on-chain perpetual trading.
According to official announcements, Morph has officially launched Morph Tachyon, an independent Layer 1 network built specifically for on-chain trading. As one of the first projects to build trading infrastructure on Morph Tachyon, the decentralized perpetual contract trading platform PopDEX will establish a high-performance on-chain trading environment based on Morph Tachyon, further enhancing the execution efficiency and user experience of on-chain derivative trading. Leveraging Morph Tachyon's high-performance on-chain trading scenario design and independent consensus and settlement architecture, PopDEX achieves a 200ms target block time, up to 200,000 TPS throughput capacity, and instant finality. Building on these high-throughput processing capabilities and trading-native architecture, PopDEX will further strengthen on-chain trading execution capabilities, supporting faster and more stable order processing and market interaction, providing traders, market makers, and liquidity providers with an on-chain trading experience closer to professional trading platforms. Both parties will continue to collaborate on on-chain trading infrastructure, jointly promoting the development of a higher-performance, higher capital efficiency on-chain market.
Zcash launches Zakura node, aiming to support 50,000 transactions per second
: Zcash has launched a new full node, Zakura, maintained by a team independent of the Zcash Foundation. It is released as a fast-sync branch that is a trimmed version of Zebra and is compatible with the legacy zcashd client, whose lifecycle will end on July 18th. Zakura is part of Zcash's scaling efforts, working in conjunction with Project Tachyon and private information retrieval research. The goal is to increase network throughput to the level of Visa and Mastercard by reducing verification data and eliminating wallet performance bottlenecks. Zakura also supports the Ironwood (NU6.3) upgrade, which will be activated on July 28th. This upgrade introduces a turnstile mechanism to limit withdrawals from the Orchard shielded pool and to control the creation of counterfeit ZEC that could be generated by potential long-term soundness bugs.

Zcash ecosystem core contributor ZODL announced a new network upgrade proposal and privacy pool, Ironwood, in collaboration with Tachyon, Valar Group, the Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs. Ironwood will be built upon the existing Orchard protocol and further enhance security through formal verification and additional independent audits.

Zcash close to completing mathematical proof to prevent hidden inflationary vulnerability, ZEC up 12%
Odaily Zcash's native token ZEC rose over 12% on Tuesday after the team responsible for developing its privacy pool said it is nearing completion of a mathematical proof to confirm that there are no undetectable counterfeit minting vulnerabilities in the latest Zcash shielded pool.The verification work, driven by Project Tachyon, is aimed at Zcash's upcoming Ironwood shielded pool. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox stated that the project is on the verge of producing a mathematical proof, with the goal of proving that the latest Zcash privacy pool has no undetectable minting vulnerabilities.This development follows the disclosure last month of a serious counterfeit vulnerability in the Zcash Orchard shielded pool. At the time, the flaw sparked market concerns about the potential for undiscoverable, hidden inflation risks within Zcash's privacy system, causing ZEC to drop by over 40% within two days.Developers say that with the help of AI-assisted formal verification, proof work that previously might have taken years has now been compressed to a few weeks.
