Senate Democrats Demand Hearing on Trump Family Crypto Project's Ties to Abu Dhabi Royal Family

Odaily, U.S. Senate Democrats have sent a letter to Republican leadership demanding an immediate hearing regarding the potential relationship between the Trump family's crypto project, World Liberty Financial, and the Abu Dhabi royal family. This follows a report by the Wall Street Journal that an investment entity backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, secretly acquired a 49% stake in World Liberty Financial. The project is a DeFi and stablecoin venture, with Donald Trump and his three sons listed as advisors.According to the report, the deal was signed by Eric Trump four days before Trump's presidential inauguration in January 2025. The transaction was valued at $500 million, half of which was paid upfront. Approximately $187 million flowed to entities controlled by the Trump family, while at least $31 million went to entities linked to the family of World Liberty co-founder Steve Witkoff. Witkoff was later appointed as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, and his son, Zach Witkoff, currently serves as CEO of World Liberty. The Trump side has stated that Trump was unaware of the $500 million investment and was not directly involved in the daily operations of World Liberty Financial. Democrats argue that the matter involves potential conflicts of interest between the president's family business interests, foreign capital, and government diplomatic roles, and have therefore called on the Republican-led Senate to launch an investigation as soon as possible.

CryptoQuant: Strategy Should Pause Bitcoin Purchases to Prioritize Rebuilding Cash Reserves

CryptoQuant suggests Michael Saylor's Strategy should currently pause further Bitcoin purchases and instead prioritize rebuilding its cash reserves, as its dividend obligations have significantly increased, cash reserves have sharply declined, and unrealized losses on Bitcoin are widening.Julio Moreno, Head of Research at CryptoQuant, pointed out that Strategy's preferred stock, STRC, fell to $82.50 last week, a 17.5% discount from its $100 par value, marking its largest historical discount. This pressure stems from the bearish Bitcoin market environment and the company's diminished cash buffer capacity. The report states that Strategy recently repurchased $1.5 billion of its 0% convertible senior notes due 2029, further reducing the cash buffer available to support STRC dividend payments. Meanwhile, the company's cash reserves have declined by 38% since the beginning of 2026.On the other hand, as Strategy issues more STRC to finance Bitcoin purchases, its annualized dividend obligation has risen from approximately $300 million at the start of the year to roughly $1.2 billion currently—a nearly fourfold increase in less than six months. CryptoQuant believes the company should become more selective in its Bitcoin purchases rather than continuing indiscriminate accumulation amid intensifying cash pressures.

Zcash Mining Firm Plans Merger with HeartSciences, Sending the Latter’s Stock Soaring

Fortitude Mining, a Zcash mining firm under Digital Currency Group, has announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement with HeartSciences Inc., a Nasdaq-listed small-cap medical technology company, to combine the two entities. Following the announcement, HeartSciences’ stock price rose approximately 60% during intraday trading on Tuesday, closing with a gain of about 55% at $2.70.Fortitude primarily engages in Zcash mining operations. Despite ZEC's recent weak performance, DCG founder and CEO Barry Silbert stated that Zcash remains one of the most attractive opportunities in the digital asset space.Fortitude CEO Andrea Childs noted that the merger is not based on business synergies, but rather aimed at gaining access to public capital markets, thereby securing more flexible financing channels to accelerate its core strategy. This includes a Zcash-focused "venture mining" platform and continued expansion into high-return opportunities within its power asset portfolio. Both parties expect the transaction to be completed in the second half of this year. The deal also indicates that some crypto mining firms are attempting to access capital markets through mergers with publicly listed companies to support their future expansion.

Kentucky becomes the ninth state in CFTC’s lawsuit over prediction market regulatory disputes

the U.S. CFTC on Tuesday sued Kentucky, attempting to prevent the state from regulating prediction market platforms as illegal sports betting and gambling operations, further establishing federal jurisdiction over prediction markets.Previously, Kentucky had last week sued platforms including Kalshi and Polymarket, accusing them of operating unlicensed illegal sports betting and gambling businesses within the state. In its complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, the CFTC stated that Kentucky’s attempt to shut down federally regulated designated contract markets interferes with the federal regulatory system established by Congress for the national swaps market. The agency claims "exclusive jurisdiction" over event contracts and prediction market products.Kentucky has become the ninth state that the CFTC has sued in the prediction market regulatory dispute, indicating that the conflict between federal derivatives regulation and state-level gambling oversight continues to escalate.

Nearly 100 Catholic leaders oppose Clarity Act, warning it may weaken safeguards against illicit finance and human trafficking

Nearly 100 Catholic leaders representing church groups across the United States have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, opposing certain provisions of the cryptocurrency market structure bill, the "Clarity Act," currently under discussion. They argue that it could weaken regulatory capabilities to combat illegal financial activities related to human trafficking. The Alliance to End Human Trafficking, supported by Catholic organizations, stated that a specific clause in the bill could make it more difficult for regulators to oversee illicit financial flows linked to human trafficking and other crimes. The letter states that the Catholic Church has long advocated that economic systems and markets should ultimately serve people, especially the poor, the vulnerable, and those most susceptible to exploitation. The organization stated that while it recognizes the potential of emerging financial technologies and supports responsible innovation, innovation should not come at the expense of human dignity and public accountability.

If the goal is to establish a global system where stablecoins interact with global currencies, this must be a collaborative global effort. Better regulation and a level playing field for issuers could help stablecoins thrive in a dramatic way. (cointelegraph)

OCC Proposes Applying the Bank Secrecy Act to Stablecoin Issuers

The rule would also establish an OCC supervisory and enforcement framework for PPSIs’ AML/CFT obligations and clarify coordination mechanisms between the OCC and FinCEN in enforcement actions. Previously, the OCC had jointly sought public comment with the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) regarding requirements for stablecoin issuers to establish customer identification programs.

Wintermute: Fed’s hawkish pivot weighs on crypto markets first; short-term range-bound volatility likely

According to Wintermute’s market weekly report, a significant macroeconomic shift occurred during the week ending June 22: The U.S. Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady at 3.50%–3.75%, but its statement adopted markedly tighter language—removing all references to accommodative policy. The median dot-plot projection rose from 3.4% to 3.8%, and 17 of the 18 FOMC members assessed inflation risks as skewed upward. The probability of a December rate hike surged from roughly 24% one month earlier to approximately 77%. Meanwhile, the Iran nuclear deal—originally scheduled for signing on June 19—collapsed following Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, prompting Iran to withdraw from negotiations. Qatar is now attempting to extend talks until the end of June. With U.S. equity markets closed for Juneteenth, they failed to react promptly; crypto markets bore the brunt first—BTC peaked near $67,000 midweek before retreating to around $62,000, posting a weekly decline of 3.8%; ETH once again fell below $2,000, dropping into the mid-$1,700 range, down 1.2% for the week; over the weekend, approximately $600 million in long positions were liquidated, while less than $90 million in short positions were cleared—highlighting persistent leverage imbalance. Wintermute noted that the narrative of forced selling by “Strategy” players has dissipated (net BTC purchases totaled 1,587 BTC between June 8–14), yet marginal demand from both ETFs and Strategy participants has clearly weakened compared to prior periods. Capital inflow channels remain unopened, and the market is stabilizing primarily under light positioning and low leverage.
