Reach Publisher Cuts 220 Editorial Positions in Response to AI Summary Impact
According to The Guardian, UK media publisher Reach, which publishes The Mirror and The Express, has announced it will eliminate 220 editorial roles as readers increasingly turn to AI-generated summaries, causing a sharp drop in website traffic. Chief Content Officer David Higgerson stated that this is the result of a "huge shift" in how audiences consume content. Reach data shows that traffic from Google fell 46% year-over-year, while digital revenue also dipped slightly to £128.9 million. Meanwhile, the company will shut down three online brands—KentLive, AberdeenLive, and GalwayBeo—and create approximately 60 new editorial positions, focusing on subscription services and long-form video content to pursue a sustainable path forward.
