Frgmnt co-founder says stablecoins cannot fully escape traditional banking risks

Odaily reports: Frgmnt co-founder and CEO Aurélien Roussel stated that stablecoins are shifting from DeFi tools to critical infrastructure for accessing US dollars, and the next phase of adoption will depend on making blockchain technology nearly invisible to end users. He noted that the 2023 bank failures demonstrated that fiat-collateralized stablecoins, despite being on-chain assets, still rely on the off-chain traditional banking system and cannot fully escape bank counterparty risk.Roussel stated that Tether maintains dominance in non-Western global trade through liquidity, exchange support, merchant acceptance, and distribution networks, while local regulatory frameworks such as MiCA are pushing issuers to build locally compliant infrastructure. He believes that Layer 2 networks have reduced stablecoin transaction costs to less than 1 cent, and issuer competition will shift toward distribution, liquidity, and financial services. Stablecoins will also expand from payment tools into programmable, yield-generating capital. CBDCs and private stablecoins are more likely to coexist. (Bitcoin.com News)

BIS Research: Rising Deposit Interest Rates Will Drag on Stablecoin Growth, with USDC More Impacted Than USDT

According to Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Working Paper No. 1382, BIS economists Iñaki Aldasoro and Rashad Ahmed of the Andersen Centre for Financial and Economic Studies published a study examining whether stablecoins and bank deposits act as substitutes. Using U.S. weekly data from January 2019 through June 2025, the study applies the local projection method to estimate how stablecoin market capitalization responds to changes in deposit interest rates. The results indicate that rising deposit interest rates forecast a deceleration in stablecoin growth. In the context of an average ten-week stablecoin growth of 15%, OLS estimates indicate that each 1-basis-point increase in deposit rates reduces the growth rate by approximately 3 percentage points, bringing it down to around 12%. By leveraging the nonlinear dynamic where bank deposit pricing becomes more responsive once the federal funds rate surpasses approximately 3% as an instrumental variable, the estimated effect expands to roughly 9 percentage points, pushing the growth rate down to about 6%. Placebo tests on non-stablecoin cryptocurrency assets reveal no comparable effects.

Microsoft Teams Up With Multiple Parties to Dismantle Phishing Network Accepting USDT Payments, Involving Over 75,000 Organizations

According to CryptoSlate, Microsoft and the cybersecurity organization Health-ISAC have obtained a U.S. court order to seize and redirect the domains supporting three services: YAM Store, CoGUI, and Iron Man. These three services sell stolen accounts and phishing tools to fraudsters. Since January this year, they have assisted in sending over 1 billion phishing messages, targeting more than 75,000 institutions across over 150 countries, generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue for operators. Microsoft has disabled more than 20,000 accounts associated with YAM Store and continues to block over 100,000 spoofing and fraudulent domains. According to Microsoft's investigation, these services accept payments in USDT (Tron network) and ETH, with Cloudflare noting that buyers can also pay using USDC. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs assisted investigators in locating and freezing related assets, though the frozen amount was not disclosed.
