South Africa’s Crypto Economy Grows 52% Over the Past Year to $39.3 Billion; Cross-Border Regulatory Draft May Be Revised

According to BeInCrypto, Chainalysis data shows that over the year ending June 2026, the South African crypto economy expanded by 52% to $39.3 billion, with increases across all tracked activity categories. Commercial payments, including those from South African merchants and P2P traders, reached $8.34 billion, outpacing institutional activity ($1.29 billion in inflows); stablecoin inflows through Sub-Saharan African P2P channels totaled $14.6 billion, on par with Bitcoin. A draft regulatory framework for crypto asset management released by the South African Treasury and Reserve Bank (SARB) on August 3 would stipulate that individuals may only transfer crypto assets abroad through authorized local service providers within existing foreign exchange limits, while businesses are prohibited from cross-border transfers of crypto assets. As of March 31, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) had issued licenses to 310 crypto asset service providers, though these entities must still secure separate authorization from the SARB. On October 21, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stated that after receiving thousands of public submissions, the Treasury will aim to release a revised second draft, with no timeline currently announced.

Tether CEO Counters JPMorgan with "Selling Ice in the Arctic" Metaphor: A $183 Billion USDT Market Cap Is the Best Response

According to BeInCrypto, JPMorgan Co-President Doug Petno stated at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference that institutional interest in blockchain and stablecoins remains in its early stages, constrained by interoperability gaps, regulations, and KYC rules, with no genuine institutional demand beyond crypto trading currently. In swift response, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino remarked that "there is no need to import ice to the Arctic," mocking JPMorgan’s assessment as out of touch with reality—Tether's USDT market cap has already neared $183 billion, while the total market capitalization of all stablecoins sits at approximately $311 billion. Notably, JPMorgan itself operates the blockchain payments division Kinexys, and its research team forecasts the stablecoin market to reach between $500 billion and $750 billion, falling well short of the $2 trillion upper limit projected by some firms.

Campaign of Brazil's pro-Bitcoin presidential candidate suspended, over $6.4 million in public funds frozen

According to BeInCrypto, Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) ruled on August 31 to suspend presidential candidate Renan Santos's digital campaign and freeze approximately 3.3 million reais (about $640,000) in public campaign funds. Justice Dias Toffoli ruled that because Santos registered his 16 campaign social media accounts 12 days past the filing deadline, he violated regulations. He was barred from participating in debates and placing paid political advertisements, with a fine of 50,000 reais (about $10,000) imposed for each violation. Santos had publicly pledged at the "Rio Blockchain 2026" conference on August 13 that if elected, he would establish a national Bitcoin reserve and turn Rio de Janeiro into a "crypto-friendly" city, while abolishing the Financial Operations Tax (IOF), making him the only candidate in this election to openly support a Bitcoin reserve. Santos termed the ruling "censorship" and stated he would pursue an appeal. His candidacy has not been revoked, and street campaigning may continue. Brazil's general election will take place on October 4.

Trust Wallet CEO Felix Fan stated that this partnership helps directly embed compliant fiat-to-crypto channels into the user journey.

SBF Second-Instance Appeal Officially Closed, 25-Year Sentence Upheld, Supreme Court Becomes Only Way Out

According to BeInCrypto, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit officially issued the mandate in the SBF case on August 4, marking the formal conclusion of Sam Bankman-Fried's appellate proceedings. The one-page order affirmed the original verdict without providing any new reasoning, leaving his 25-year prison sentence and approximately $11 billion forfeiture order unchanged. Previously, on June 12, the panel rejected SBF's appeals on all seven counts. In the opinion, Judge Parker noted that while SBF publicly assured customers, investors, and regulators of the safety of FTX funds, he misappropriated customer funds for real estate, political donations, and personal investments. Currently, SBF's only remaining judicial recourse is to petition for a writ of certiorari from the U.S. Supreme Court within 90 days, but the Supreme Court's acceptance rate is extremely low. Additionally, SBF has separately submitted a clemency application to the Department of Justice, but Senators Cynthia Lummis and Ruben Gallego have jointly introduced a resolution opposing the granting of clemency to him.
