Goldman Sachs: Information Technology Stocks See Biggest Sell-Off in a Decade, Selling Pressure May Be Nearing Exhaustion

According to TechFlow Research, Goldman Sachs' August 3 position tracking report shows that the volume of long sales for global information technology stocks last week reached the highest level since 2014, with the total selling volume over two consecutive days ranking second highest in nearly a decade. Hedge funds' total leverage gave back half of its year-to-date gains, and net leverage turned negative year-to-date. Retail margin balances in South Korea and Japan began to reverse after reaching historical extremes, while US retail investors are also reducing semiconductor stock holdings. Speculative net shorts in VIX futures have largely been cleared. Goldman Sachs believes the intensity of deleveraging may have peaked, but the inertia of capital outflows persists. Individual stock implied volatility rose to the highest level since 2020, index correlation fell to low levels, and the market is shifting from trading the AI sector broadly to differentiated pricing of individual stocks. Bond funds and money market funds are the main drivers of capital inflows this year; equity funds saw inflows of $34 billion in July, with an absolute scale far smaller than that of the bond market. Goldman Sachs judges that the stock selection environment is improving, but sector beta trading still faces pressure.

Analyst: Bitcoin May Be Bottoming Out in a "Boring Market," ETF Inflows Fail to Push Price Higher

According to Odaily, despite spot Bitcoin ETFs recording net inflows of $211.5 million on Tuesday, the price of Bitcoin remained largely flat, hovering around $64,000. Analysts believe this movement resembles the market being compressed into a low-volatility state, rather than signaling an impending sharp decline. On the same day, spot Ethereum ETFs also recorded net inflows of $53.8 million. In the broader macro market, the S&P 500 index closed at a record high of 7,737 points on August 4, the Nasdaq rose 2.6% driven by AI earnings, and Brent crude oil fell below $80 due to easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.Wintermute OTC trader Jasper De Maere stated that ETF buying entering the market but failing to push Bitcoin's price higher is itself a key signal, indicating that marginal buyers in the spot market are not truly one-sided bulls. He believes that for Bitcoin to sustain its recovery narrative, it needs a clear breakout above $65,000 in the short term.Overall, analysts are interpreting the current Bitcoin price action as a form of "boring bottoming": no obvious panic selling, yet lacking strong upward momentum. ETF inflows provide support, but the price remains suppressed below key resistance, suggesting the market is still waiting for a clearer directional catalyst.

Coldcard vulnerability pushes Bitcoin's 7-day hot supply up 98% in a week, with approximately 890,000 BTC moved

Odaily Odaily News: K33 Head of Research Vetle Lunde stated that the Coldcard attack likely drove the movement of approximately 890,000 BTC within 7 days, setting the highest 7-day active supply record for 2026. K33 estimates that around 7,300 addresses had approximately 1,596 BTC stolen at the time the report was prepared. The incident stems from a firmware flaw introduced by Coinkite in March 2021 in Coldcard hardware wallets, which may generate wallet seeds with insufficient randomness. Since July 30, coordinated transfers have removed approximately 1,600 BTC from thousands of addresses, worth over $100 million, and a possible fourth wave of attacks has pushed the total to nearly 2,000 BTC. On-chain data shows that Bitcoin's 7-day hot supply rose from 403,101.95 BTC on July 28 to 797,407.72 BTC on August 4, an increase of approximately 394,306 BTC in one week, or 98%. Sani from Timechainindex.com stated that since the Coldcard hack on Friday, exchanges have seen net inflows of 22,052 BTC. From July 30 to August 5, 39 dormant addresses moved a total of 1,486.09044782 BTC, worth over $95 million. Among them, one address created in 2010 moved 50 BTC, and five addresses created in 2013 collectively moved 620.00100547 BTC.

Retail Investors Adjust Overseas Portfolios After South Korea Tightens Single-Stock Leverage Thresholds, Shift to Buying Underlying US Stocks

According to South Korean media Daum, after South Korean financial regulators raised the investment threshold for single-stock leveraged products, South Korean retail investors began adjusting their overseas investment portfolios, reducing holdings of high-leverage products and shifting to directly buying underlying US stocks. South Korean investors still net bought approximately $14.58 million worth of TSLL on August 3, but on August 4, the buying amount plummeted to $1.56 million, while the selling amount rose to $8.68 million, turning to a net sell of $7.11 million for the day.

South African Treasury and Central Bank Release Draft Manual on Cross-Border Crypto Asset Regulation, Seeking Public Comments

According to an official media announcement, the South African National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) jointly released the "Draft Manual on Cross-Border Crypto Asset Activities" on August 3, 2026, which is now open for public consultation with a deadline of September 30, 2026. The manual is implemented in conjunction with the previously released "Draft Regulations on Capital Flow Management 2026," aiming to strengthen supervision over cross-border financial activities and prevent risks related to illicit financial flows associated with crypto assets. The manual clarifies the trigger points for cross-border crypto asset transactions—when crypto assets are transferred between a domestic authorized CASP and a foreign CASP, or from a domestic authorized CASP to a non-custodial wallet, it constitutes cross-border capital inflow or outflow and must be reported to the Financial Supervision Department (FinSurv). It is worth noting that at this stage, only individuals are allowed to conduct crypto asset outflow operations through authorized CASPs within the single discretionary allowance or foreign capital allowance; South African entities are temporarily not allowed to conduct related cross-border operations. In addition, the manual currently does not distinguish between different types of crypto assets, nor does it list crypto assets as official South African currency.

Bernstein: Slim Hopes for Clarity Act Passage, SEC and CFTC May Accelerate Crypto Regulatory Rulemaking

According to The Block, Bernstein analysts indicated that the likelihood of the U.S. Clarity Act passing within 2026 is declining, with the Senate left with only this week's window (before recess on August 7). Analysts noted that if the bill fails, the digital asset market may experience a negative reaction in the short term, but the SEC and CFTC will accelerate rule-making under the "Project Crypto" framework, covering token classification, DeFi, and self-custody regulatory details, while continuing to promote innovative areas such as tokenized real-world assets (RWA), perpetual contracts, and prediction markets. CFTC Chairman Michael Selig previously also warned that if Congress fails to act, regulators will be forced to "take over all rule-making". Currently, bipartisan senators Thom Tillis and Ruben Gallego have submitted a revised ethics compromise proposal, and negotiations are still ongoing.

Bitgo CEO deposits ~$6.3M in BTC, challenges Claude to move the funds

: Bitgo CEO Mike Belshe deposited 100 BTC into a public Bitcoin address on August 1, worth approximately $6.3 million at the time, and invited Anthropic's Claude model to attempt to move the funds out of the address. On-chain records show the wallet received the funds on July 31, and the balance had not been transferred out as of August 2. Anthropic previously disclosed that during 141,006 cybersecurity assessment runs, 3 incidents were found, with 6 evaluation sessions involving 3 models inadvertently interacting with real organizational systems. The models involved include Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Mythos 5, and an unreleased internal research model. The cause was a configuration error by third-party testing partner Irregular, which led to the test environment being connected to the internet. Anthropic stated that Claude Opus 4.7, during one evaluation, located a real website with the same name as a simulated company, exploited weak passwords and exposed services to recover infrastructure credentials, and accessed a production database containing hundreds of records. The company said the model was attempting to complete assigned tasks, not actively breaking constraints or pursuing independent goals. Belshe's challenge involves Bitgo's institutional custody platform, which uses multi-signature or multi-party computation technology to distribute signing authority across multiple independent keys. As of August 2, Anthropic had not publicly responded to the challenge.

Coldcard security incident loses 1,359.882 BTC, attacker address receives 10% coin-mixing offer

Odaily News: In the Coldcard security incident involving hardware wallet company Coinkite, the amount of stolen bitcoin has risen to approximately 1,359.882 BTC. According to statistics from the Coldcard Sweep Watch dashboard, most of the identified bitcoin remains in a small number of addresses controlled by the attacker. On August 1, one of the attacker's holding addresses received a transaction containing an OP_RETURN message. The message publicly offered a 10% fee for "washing" bitcoin, KYC assistance, and withdrawal services for stolen funds, along with a Telegram contact. Coinkite has released an urgent firmware update to fix the weak random number generation issue that caused the original vulnerability. The company stated that the new firmware only protects wallets created in the future and cannot fix seeds already generated on affected versions. Some users have reported that after installing the update, their devices remain stuck on an error screen, fail to boot, or appear bricked. This mainly affects Mk4 and Q devices, though some Mk3 users have also reported similar issues. As of August 2, Coinkite has not publicly confirmed a widespread firmware defect.

Glassnode Warns of Market Liquidity Pressure: BTC Three-Month Futures Basis Hits Historically Rare Low

Odaily News On-chain analytics firm Glassnode stated that the yield on Bitcoin's three-month futures basis has remained below the yield on the U.S. two-year Treasury note since February this year, a trend that has now persisted for several months.Glassnode pointed out that there has only been one similar instance in history where the duration of this condition came close to the current one, namely the period from August 2022 to January 2023, which ultimately corresponded to the low point of the previous market cycle. The firm stated that the prolonged slump in the futures basis not only reflects weak market demand for leverage but also directly impacts the overall depth and trading volume of the market.Analysts believe that the futures basis is typically used to gauge market risk appetite and demand for arbitrage funds. When the basis yield falls below the risk-free rate, it implies that investors are earning insufficient additional returns for the risk taken by holding Bitcoin futures, which may lead to reduced capital inflows into the futures market, thereby affecting liquidity and trading activity.

Analysis: Bitcoin falls to two-week low as market watches $62K support level

Odaily News: Bitcoin price has come under renewed pressure, slipping to a two-week low amid late-July volatility, with market attention focused on whether it may extend declines toward the $62,000 zone. Analysts noted that during periods of sharp fluctuations in South Korean equities, trading activity in the crypto market increased noticeably, signaling a growing correlation between cryptocurrency liquidity, regional stock positioning adjustments, and overall sentiment in the tech sector.Despite Bitcoin's relatively strong performance in July, traders are warning that August could see a repeat of the bear-market dynamics seen in 2022. Data shows BTC/USD finished July trading up approximately 8.5%—its strongest July performance since 2022. Some traders anticipate the rebound could extend into August, and drawing parallels with the 2022 bear-market cycle, they suggest the market may go through a phase of recovery before establishing a longer-term bottom.
