Federal Reserve’s SHED Report: AI Penetration in the Workplace Accelerates, Cryptocurrency Usage Slightly Rebounds

According to the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED), 25% of employed individuals use generative AI for work; 81% of these users report time savings. The usage rate among those with graduate degrees (43%) is four times higher than among those with a high school diploma or less (10%). AI users generally hold optimistic views about their career prospects, and the share expressing concern about job displacement remains relatively low.
Cryptocurrency usage has rebounded to 10%, up 2 percentage points from 2024, though it remains below its 2021 peak. Most cryptocurrency use is for investment and holding (9%), while actual payment use remains rare (2%). Losses from cryptocurrency fraud are unrecoverable at a rate as high as 65%, representing significantly higher risk than other payment methods.
