Metropolitan Police: AI Fraud Reports Surge 395%, Losses Reach £9.6 Million
According to the first Annual Assessment Report on Fraud Reporting (fiscal year 2025/26) released by the City of London Police, AI-related fraud reports surged from 193 to 956, marking a 395 percent increase, while related losses skyrocketed from £1.2 million to £9.6 million. The report indicates that criminals are extensively leveraging AI-generated videos, voice cloning, and spoofed websites to carry out investment fraud, and are using cryptocurrency to transfer illicit proceeds. Between January and June 2026, over 180,000 victims received case outcome notifications, with the average review time compressed from 37 days to 5 days. The City of London Police has urged all victims to actively report incidents via the Report Fraud platform to assist law enforcement in identifying emerging threats and safeguarding more potential victims.
