Mainland man loses RMB 500,000 in cryptocurrency investment, attempts suicide in Hong Kong but is arrested
According to Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, a 34-year-old mainland Chinese man recently traded on a cryptocurrency platform and lost approximately RMB 500,000. After multiple unsuccessful complaints to the platform, on May 14, the man posted online—on the platform—his plan to travel to Hong Kong to commit suicide. Law enforcement authorities immediately launched an investigation and intercepted him at a fast-food restaurant on Queensway in Admiralty that same afternoon. A lighter and suspected gasoline were found on his person. He was arrested on suspicion of “possessing an article with intent to destroy or damage property” and is currently in custody for questioning. No injuries occurred in this incident.
